A word from your host

The first thing we’re building in The Clearing is the geodesic dome. This will be the place where our workshops will happen: where our turbines will be assembled, our medicines will be made, our mead will be brewed. This will be the place where people can begin to explore the future.

Now we need you to come and volunteer to help us build it.

WHY A DOME?

First invented by Buckminster Fuller (that’s him, swinging in the middle, in the picture below), geodesic domes are a combination of high-tech design and low-tech building materials. Crucially, they’re easy to build out of the left overs of industrial civilisation, with nothing more than hand-tools and other human beings. IE very appropriate for the world to come in twenty years time.*

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

We need people to help in all aspects of the build: preparing materials, erecting the structure, building the deck it sits on, insulating the dome and building the fence around it.

WHAT DO I GET OUT OF IT?

Building the dome is our first workshop. At each stage, we’ll explain how it’s done, and you’ll learn skills to take back to your own project/course/survivalist homestead. If you’re local, we’ll help with your travel expenses. If you’re from further afield, we can offer accommodation. Everyone will get access to a warm fire, endless cups of tea, and a square meal in the middle of the day, too.

WHEN DO YOU NEED PEOPLE?

We’ll need people to be available between Saturday 18th February and Wednesday 1st March 2017. Ideally, you’ll be able to commit to 3 days over that period (as this will give you the best opportunity to learn some useful skills).

WHO ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

We need people who are:
- Handy enough to put up a shelf, use a drill and follow an Ikea instruction manual.
- Hardy enough to work outdoors in February. It’s going to be cold.
- Willing to learn.
